Tutorials: Long Division 2-digit Quotient

Long Division 2-digit Quotient

In Long Division the answer is not always in the 1s place. Let's use the example of 87 divided by 5. We know that 5 times 10 is less than 87. To do Long Division we first place 87 the dividend inside the box and 5 the divisor outside the box. In this case we need to start in the 10s place. 5 goes into 8 or 80 at least 10 times. 1 times 5 or 10 times 5 is 50. We subtract 50 from 87 and get 37. Now we continue the division process and we say that 5 goes into 37, 7 times because 7 times 5 is 35. We subtract 35 from 37 and get 2. 2 cannot be divided by 5 and thus our remainder is 2. So 87 divided by 5 is equal to 17 remainder 2.
